The Ridderzaal
Interesting paintings of early s'Gravenhage especially the Binnenhof and its surroundings
the different stages of the "Ridderzaal"built around 1256 a gothic building. Count Floris IV of Holland bought in the 13th cent. a piece of land next to a small lake (pond) to build a house on, in 1248 his son William II count of Holland and Rex Romanorum decided to extend the residence to a palace. he died in 1256 before the palace was completed works were finished by his son Floris V. It served a variety of purposes - as market hall - an important trading place for booksellers as Westminster Hall was in London. It later became a promenade, a drill hall a public record office a hospital ward even the state offices of the state lottery it was restored in 1898
there was originally a frontbuilding later removed and in 1898 2 spires were added by Pierre Cuypers.
The permanent collection shows the history of the Hague originating from the village "dieHaghe which was added to the property of Floris IV to become "Des Graven Hage" litteraly means the counts wood
